Anucha Boonyawattana

Born in Nakhon Phanom, a North-Eastern Province of Thailand, in 1981, Anucha Boonyawatana is a Thai trans
woman film director. Her first feature film “The Blue Hour” had its world premiere at Panorama section of Berlin
International Film Festival 2015. The film acquired awards from Fantasia International Film Festival and FEST
International Film Festival.
In 2017, She wrote and directed her second feature film “Malila : the Farewell Flower”, A visual poetry of life
of a gay couple combined with a traditional Thai Bai Sri art and dark Buddhist spiritualism. “Malila” win Kim
Jiseok Award at Busan International Film Festival. The film also win Best Director awards from both Singapore
International Film Festival and International Film Festival of Kerala, Artistic Achievement award from LA
Outfest, and also Nominate for Asian Film Award Best New Director and Best Actor. Malila was selected as
the Thai entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards.
